Skin Cancer & Aging: A Senior’s Guide to Safety on the Gold Coast

This special episode of Your Retirement Years (Episode 68, aired 20 Oct 2025) features Rebecca from Odyssey Lifestyle Care Communities sitting down for an open, honest chat with Sana Maqsood, CEO of Auzskin Aesthetic & Skin Cancer Clinic

With more than 14 years in public health, Sana has seen the real impact of sun exposure, ageing skin and delayed check-ups, especially among seniors on the Gold Coast.

Their conversation was warm, insightful and very real. Below is a natural summary of what they discussed, keeping the heart and rawness of the interview intact.

Why Skin Cancer Is So Common in Australia

Australia records some of the highest skin cancer rates in the world, with Queensland consistently ranking at the top. Our beautiful weather and active outdoor lifestyle mean constant UV exposure, often beginning in childhood. Many seniors grew up in an era when sunscreen wasn’t widely used, which contributes significantly to higher risks later in life.

Sana explains that cumulative sun exposure is the main driver of skin cancer. Even the occasional burns from decades past leave lasting damage that may only become visible in older age.

Are Seniors More Vulnerable?

Sana gently pointed out that yes, seniors are at higher risk – not because of anything they’re doing now, but because of what happened in the past. Many people used baby oil to tan, rarely wore hats and didn’t think twice about spending hours in direct sun.

Today, awareness is much greater, but earlier damage can still surface. That’s why consistent monitoring is essential.

Checking Your Skin at Home

Rebecca asked how seniors can keep an eye on their skin day-to-day, and Sana kept it simple:

Use your everyday moments.

Whether you’re showering, getting dressed or catching a glimpse of your back in the mirror, those are the perfect times to notice anything new or anything that’s changed.

She said people often know their skin better than anyone else, they’re just not always sure what’s “normal” and what’s not. Anything that feels unusual, new or different deserves attention.

The ABCDE Guide for Moles

Sana referred to the Cancer Council’s ABCDE method as an easy way to monitor your skin:

  • Asymmetry

One half looks different from the other

  • Border

Jagged or spreading edges

  • Colour

Uneven or changing colours

  • Diameter

Larger than 6 mm (though smaller spots can still be suspicious)

  • Evolving

Any change in size, shape or behaviour

Sana emphasises that people are often the first to notice these changes, but they’re not the best at diagnosing them. A GP or skin cancer specialist should always confirm what’s safe and what’s not.

When to Seek Professional Advice

If something doesn’t look right, don’t wait. Sunspots, moles and pigmentation can appear very similar, and online searches often lead to confusion rather than clarity.

A proper skin check, either with your GP or a certified skin cancer clinic, remains the most reliable way to assess your skin health.

It’s Never Too Late to Protect Your Skin

Even later in life, adopting sun-safe habits can make a meaningful difference. Sana reminds us that prevention is always better than a cure.

Simple measures such as wearing a hat, applying SPF50+ sunscreen, choosing long sleeves when practical and enjoying the shade whenever possible still help protect against further UV damage while allowing you to enjoy the outdoor lifestyle you love.

Choosing the Right Sunscreen

Rebecca mentioned how confusing sunscreen shopping can be, and Sana agreed.

She recommended sticking to SPF50+ products that meet Australian standards, especially those approved by respected organisations like the Cancer Council. She also suggested patch-testing if you have sensitive skin because formulas vary a lot now, from lightweight gels to zinc-based creams.

Makeup with SPF is helpful, but shouldn’t replace real sunscreen.

Skin Rejuvenation Options for Older Adults

Contrary to common belief, aesthetic treatments are not just for younger people. Sana stresses that beauty has no age limit, and many seniors seek cosmetic treatments to improve confidence, comfort and overall well-being.

There are three main categories:

1. Injectables

These help soften wrinkles, restore lost volume and improve natural facial features. Treatments must be personalised based on skin thickness, facial structure and overall health.

2. Laser Treatments

Used for pigmentation, sun damage and texture improvement. Suitability depends on skin tone and previous sun exposure.

3. Advanced Facials & Non-Surgical Treatments

Hydrating, resurfacing or tightening treatments can noticeably refresh the skin without downtime.

A thorough consultation is very important. A qualified practitioner will assess your history, concerns and goals. He/she will create a tailored pathway that may include one or a combination of these treatments.

Are These Treatments Safe for Seniors?

Yes – when performed by trained professionals. Older men & women in their 60s, 70s and beyond can safely enjoy rejuvenation treatments with the right guidance. A realistic approach and step-by-step planning ensure natural and healthy results that enhance rather than alter appearance.

Men are also increasingly seeking cosmetic treatments, from anti-wrinkle injections to facials and eyebrow grooming.

Sana notes that this trend is growing quickly thanks to improved awareness and reduced stigma.

Choosing Fillers and Other Enhancements

Fillers can enhance cheeks and soften deep lines or rebalance facial contours. The key is understanding what can realistically be achieved based on your natural features. Results take time to settle, and your practitioner will guide you through what to expect.

Again, a personalised consultation is essential, and it is more important for mature skin with unique needs.

Daily Skin Care Matters Most

No treatment can replace a good routine. Sana highlights the importance of consistent cleansing, moisturising and sun protection. Simple habits like removing makeup before bed, keeping skin hydrated and using SPF daily form the foundation of long-term skin health.

Healthy skin looks better, feels better and responds better to any Cosmetic treatments you may choose.

Final Words

Sana’s message is clear:

Look after your skin, trust your instincts and seek professional advice early. It’s never too late to start caring for your skin or exploring treatments that help you feel your best.

We hope this conversation inspires seniors and their families to stay vigilant, stay protected and stay confident.
